How to play Regents

  1. Place exactly one crown in every row, every column and every coloured region.
  2. No two crowns may touch โ€” not side by side, and not diagonally either.
  3. Tap once to mark a square you have ruled out, and again to place a crown.
  4. The board is solved when every row, column and colour holds one crown.

Tips & strategy

  • Start with the smallest colour region. A region of two or three squares constrains the board hardest.
  • A region confined to a single row or column owns that line โ€” every other square in it can be ruled out at once.
  • After each crown, immediately rule out its whole row, column and all eight neighbours. The eliminations cascade.
  • If a row has only one square left unruled, that square is a crown. These chains are how the board falls.

Frequently asked questions

Is there always exactly one solution?

Yes. Boards are generated from a valid crown arrangement and then verified by exhaustive search, and any board with a second solution is discarded.

Do crowns really clash diagonally?

Yes, and it is the rule people forget most often. Two crowns meeting at a single corner is not allowed.

How large do the boards get?

From seven by seven up to nine by nine, with one crown and one colour region per line whatever the size.
